Global Studies Symposium Agenda

It is our honor to invite you and your group to the 2018 Global Studies Symposium, a collaborative effort between the University of Kansas Area Studies Centers and Donnelly College, on Thursday, April 12, 2018 from 12:00-4:00 p.m. in the Kansas Memorial Union.

This symposium is free and open to the public. Find more information, view an agenda, and register your group at here. Register by Thursday, April 05, 2018 to receive a free lunch. Lunch is not guaranteed after April 05, 2018.

 


Pre-Welcome

11:30-12:00 p.m. – Malott Room

A reception area set-up for traveling students from area high schools and regional institutions.

Welcome + Introductions 

12:00-12:10 p.m. – Kansas Room

Area Studies Center Coordinators will welcome attendees and explain the events of the day.

Lunch

12:10-1:00 p.m. – Kansas Room

Boxed lunches are reserved via online registration form.

Info-Fair

12:10-1:00 p.m. – Outside of Kansas Room

Staff and students available to speak to you about academic programs, university resources, and student organizations.

Student Panel Discussion: “Discovering Your Path in International Area Studies”

12:30-1:00 p.m. – Kansas Room

A panel of undergraduate and graduate students at KU will share their experiences studying abroad, working in international internships, volunteering in civil service 

and/or navigating graduate degrees in area studies.

Student Creative Writing Performance (Donnelly College)

1:00-1:06 p.m. – Malott Room

A reading of a short poem written by Rocio Alonzo, undergraduate student at Donnelly College.

Student Research Presentations

1:06-2:36 p.m. – Malott Room

Undergraduate and graduate students will give 5 minute presentations on research projects (Red Hot Research-style).

Group 1: CLACS, KASC & Donnelly College

25 minutes for presentations + 5 minutes for group synthesis Q&A

Group 2: Donnelly College, CGIS & CREES

25 minutes for presentations + 5 minutes for group synthesis Q&A

Group 3: CREES, CEAS & Donnelly College

25 minutes for presentations + 5 minutes for group synthesis Q&A

Student Creative Writing Performance (University of Kansas)

2:36-2:42 p.m. – Malott Room

A reading of a short poem written by TBA, undergraduate student at the University of Kansas.

Faculty Research Presentations

2:42-4:00 p.m. – Malott Room

Area studies faculty will give 5 minute presentations on research projects and/or service-learning projects (Red Hot Research-style).

Group 1: CLACS & CEAS

20 minutes for presentations + 4 minutes for group synthesis Q&A

Group 2: CGIS & CREES

20 minutes for presentations + 4 minutes for group synthesis Q&A

Group 3: KASC & Donnelly College

25 minutes for presentations + 5 minutes for group synthesis Q&A
