2023 Waggoner Research Colloquium

The Waggoner Research Colloquium is the signature event of the center, to which affiliate faculty, graduate students, and the Advisory Board are invited.  The 32nd annual Waggoner was quite an entertaining success, as those of you attended attested.  The theme was “Addressing Popular Imagination about Latin America & the Caribbean.”  John Hoopes (Anthropology) captivated with “Quetzalcoatl, Viracocha, Lost White Races, and the Reality of Indigenous Heritage,”Ninel Valderrama (Spanish & Portuguese) provoked discussion with “Chinese Identity in 19th Century Cuba and Mexico”, and Chris Brown (Geography & Environmental Studies) mesmerized with “Geographies of Human Survival in the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.” In the best of the Waggoner tradition, the speakers combined expertise with provocative imagery and delivery.  The Q & A session was lively and took our understanding to another level.  Again, we thank all those who participated, especially the speakers and CLACS staff.
