World Languages Fair

World Languages "Hello" in colored bubbles

Background

Working in collaboration with KU's Area Studies Centers and KU International Affairs, and in partnership with the Foreign Language Association of Missouri, the Kansas World Language Association and the Kansas Department of Education, the Open Language Resource Center hosted the first annual World Languages Fair on the KU Lawrence campus on Saturday, October 19th, 2019.  The event brought middle- and high-school students to campus for a day focused on exploring world languages and cultures. Sessions included mini-lessons in a range of languages, presentations on target cultures, and discussions of how intercultural competence can enhance different fields of study.  These presentations were led by faculty from the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Benedictine College, Johnson County Community College, Pittsburg State University, and Fort Hays State University. During an extended lunch period there were information booths where students could learn more about language-related scholarships, study abroad opportunities, and internationally-focused student organizations.

Please find information about the logistics and schedule of the event, as well as short descriptions of what presentations were offered by clicking the links below!

This annual event is free for all participants.  All registered attendees receive a free lunch and a free t-shirt and the opportunity to win other prizes.  Schools are responsible for transportation costs to the event. Individual students, including those being home-schooled, are also invited to attend and should contact the Open Language Resource Center at olrc@ku.edu to register.
