“Indigenous Responses to Climate Change” Conference Makes Impact on Participants

On September 27-29, 2023, the center with funding from the 2018-23 and 2022-26 NRC grants, organized and hosted an “Indigenous Responses to Climate Change” conference at which 29 presenters from 10 countries participated. All but three of the presenters were either Latin American or Latinx, and 6 were indigenous.  Presenters attended either in-person or via the internet from Brazil, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Paraguay, Spain, and the U.S. The speakers were thrilled to meet each other and share the climate and environmental problems they are unjustly experiencing as well as the ways they are addressing them. Many expressed a desire to make this an annual event and produce an edited volume, which our featured speaker, Dr. David Barkin (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Mexico), is currently shouldering. With the help of our graduate student worker, David Martínez, we uploaded the individual talks to YouTube.
