On September 28-30, 2023, the Center organized and hosted the “Indigenous Responses to Climate Change” conference with funding from the 2018-23 and 2022-26 NRC grants. Twenty-nine presenters from 10 countries participated. All but three of the presenters were either Latin American or Latinx, and six were indigenous. Presenters attended either in-person or via the internet from Brazil, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Paraguay, Spain, and the U.S. The speakers were thrilled to meet each other and share the climate and environmental problems they are unjustly experiencing, as well as the ways they are addressing them. Many expressed a desire to make this an annual event and to produce an edited volume, which our featured speaker, Dr. David Barkin (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Mexico), is currently shouldering.
