Traveling to Lawrence


Lawrence is located approximately 30 miles east of Topeka and 40 miles west of Kansas City. If you are planning to drive, KU’s Admissions Office provides directions to KU and tips for getting around Lawrence.

For those traveling by plane, you will need to fly into Kansas City International Airport (MCI). It is a well-connected airport with nonstop flights across the country as well as layover routes through cities such as Denver, Dallas, Chicago, St. Louis, and Atlanta. From MCI, the trip to Lawrence takes approximately 45 minutes by car. There are several options for ground transportation between Kansas City and Lawrence.

Renting a Vehicle

Most major car rental companies have an office at MCI, and they share a common rental car shuttle that can take you from the airport terminal to the rental car shelter. You can get directions from the airport to your hotel (or the KU campus) on the MCI website.

MCI provides many options for both private and shared-ride shuttles that can take you to and from the airport.

Taxis

Information about airport taxis can be found on the MCI website. You can also book a cab through Jayhawk Taxi based in Lawrence. The rate is typically around $100 (one-way) for 1-2 passengers.  You can also arrange car transportation services from MCI to Lawrence through Uber.
