Fulbright Awards for US Graduate Students, US Department of State

This program offers scholarships for foreign study at the pre-doctoral level in over 120 countries. This opportunity allows graduate students to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. Only US citizens at the time of application are eligible. Applicants must submit their proposals through their campus Fulbright Program Adviser in the Office of International Programs.

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program , US Department of Education

This program funds full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and studies that focus on one or more of the following: Africa , East Asia , Southeast Asia and the Pacific, South Asia , the Near East , East Central Europe and Eurasia , and the Western Hemisphere (Central and South America and the Caribbean ). Projects focusing on Australia , Canada , and Western Europe are ineligible. Students must apply through their institutions. At KU, students must submit their completed individual applications to the KU Office of International Programs . US citizenship is required. Amount: $15,000-$60,000.

Institute of International Education, The Inter-American Foundation (IAF) Fellowship Program

The program was created to fund the self-help initiatives of the organized poor in Latin America and the Caribbean and the groups that directly support them. To complement its work, the IAF has reinstated its Fellowships for candidates for PhD degrees from United States universities as they conduct their dissertation research. Fellowships are available to currently registered students who have advanced to candidacy for the PhD in the social sciences, physical sciences, technical fields and the professions as related to grassroots development issues. The applicant must be a PhD student, must be currently enrolled in a US university, and must have completed all course requirements and qualifying or comprehensive examinations for the doctoral degree before initiating the IAF-funded field research. Amount: transportation, $3,000 research allowance and a $1,500 monthly stipend.

The Kansas Paraguay Partners

Formed in 1968, the Kansas-Paraguay Partners and its Paraguayan counterpart the Comité Paraguay Kansas is an international volunteer organization promoting people-to-people exchanges between Paraguayans and Kansans. Both organizations are members of the Partners of the Americas (POA), the Western hemisphere’s largest private, completely apolitical volunteer organization. The Partners offer several scholarships for U.S. undergraduates interested in studying in Paraguay as well as guidance for students interested in creating a program and connections to external resources. Since Paraguay has no formal study abroad programs, KU students must create a student-initiated program (SIP) through the KU Office of Study Abroad. The National Security Education Program (NSEP)

The David L. Boren Fellowships enable US graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. NSEP supports students studying languages, cultures, and world regions other than Western Europe , Canada , Australia , and New Zealand . Boren Fellowships are intended to support US graduate students who will pursue the study of languages and cultures deemed critical to US national security, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government. United States Institute of Peace (USIP)

The Jennings Randolph (JR) Program for International Peace awards nonresidential Peace Scholar Dissertation Fellowships. These fellowships are intended to support the research and writing of dissertations addressing the sources and nature of international conflict and the full range of ways to prevent or end conflict and to sustain peace. Dissertation projects from all disciplines are welcome. Priority will be given to projects that contribute knowledge relevant to the formulation of policy on international peace and conflict issues. Currently, awards are set at $20,000 for 10 months.

Conference on Latin American History (CLAH)

James R. Scobie Memorial Award For Preliminary PhD Research

The purpose of the award is to permit a short, exploratory research trip abroad (normally four to twelve weeks) to determine the feasibility of a Ph. D. dissertation topic dealing with some facet of Latin American history. The grant must be used during the summer following the award, unless there is prior approval from the Award Committee and the Secretariat of the Conference on Latin American History. Under no circumstances is the award to be combined with a research grant for an extended stay. Amount: up to $1,500.

Lydia Cabrera Awards in Cuban Historical Studies

These awards are available to support the study of Cuba between 1492 and 1868. Awards are designed specifically to support: 1) original research on Cuban history in Spanish, Mexican, and US archives; 2) the publication of meritorious books on Cuba currently out of print; and 3) the publication of historical statistics, historical documents, and guides to Spanish archives relating to Cuban history between 1492 and 1868.. Applicants for original research are to be currently engaged in graduate studies at a U. S. institution or be affiliated with a college/university faculty or accredited historical association in the United States . Amount: up to $5,000.

Lewis Hanke Postdoctoral Award

The award carries a stipend of up to $1,000, to be used only for international travel. It will be given annually to a recent PhD recipient in order to conduct field research that will allow transformation of the dissertation into a book. Applicants must have completed their PhD degrees in the field of Latin American history no more than four years prior to the closing date of the application.

Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC)

The Muti-Country Fellowship Program is open to US doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their PhD in fields in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences and wish to conduct research of regional or trans-regional significance. The Fellowship requires scholars to conduct research in more than one country, at least one of which hosts a participating American Overseas Research Center . Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative and/or cross-regional research. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams. The Fellowships will be awarded to US citizens only.
